March 2023 Kind Kid Spotlight:

Welcome to this month's Kind Kid Spotlight! We are so excited for you to meet Erin Scott, a senior at Arundel High School, embracing the role of giving back to others through kindness and love. Erin's heart is bursting with ideas on how to spread kindness to others and she even encouraged her entire school community to join her for a special campaign. Ms. Stawas, an administrator at Arundel High School, shared Erin's story with us! Beautiful work, Erin!

Erin grew up with a brother who has PCD, a severe illness that left him going in and out of hospitals frequently his whole life. Watching him go through this experience where he spent so much time in and out of hospitals and missing out on typical childhood events, Erin had the idea to start a charity inspired by him. She wanted to give other children like her brother the opportunity to feel a little less scared and stressed while at the hospital and provide them with a sense of comfort. Erin started “A Sister’s Love” seven years ago, and she has delivered creative care packages to some of the local hospitals including Johns Hopkins, University Of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, along with Children’s Hospital (where her brother spent a lot of time). But the amazing part about Erin's mission is that she has taught so many other students to be empathetic and to join her cause. Most recently, she launched a campaign at Arundel High School to collect play dough for Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital. She called in "Play Doh for Dough." She created lessons with which she taught the whole school about PCD and also how Play Doh can be more than a toy but also a stress relieving tool for hospitalized children. Then she created a competition for classes to collect Play Doh. The classes who collected the most Play Doh won a pizza party (the dough). Erin's goal was to collect 500 cans of Play Doh. She exceeded her goal by collecting over 3,400 cans of Play Doh. The Child Life Specialists at Johns Hopkins were so amazed by not only the generous donation but also her ability to ignite and educate a whole school to support her cause. I'm confident that Erin has inspired and paved the way for future kindness changemakers at Arundel and we can't wait to see the next act of kindness blossom all because of Erin!

September 2022 Kind Kids Spotlight:

Three cheers to Crofton High School's Unified Bocce Team for their many accomplishments during their 2022 season. The team spread kindness and promoted inclusion throughout the season. Students involved went above and beyond to help and include others, both on their team and the opposing teams.

They exemplified what it means to be Unified! They volunteered their time at events such as the AACPS Unified Bocce County Championship and the Special Olympics Unified Bocce State Championship tournament on May 24th. 2022. The season also brought a special recognition, the Craig T. White Sportsmanship Award.

To top off the year the Unified Bocce Team won their very first State Championship in Crofton High School history! It is very fitting that Crofton High School's first ever State Champion is a Unified Sport.

Thank you to Coach Stedman for sharing this information with Kindness Grows Here! Go Cardinals!

Meet Anika and Krish! These awesome siblings organized a lemonade and bakery stand over the summer of 2021 to raise money for a local shelter in their community. Anika and Krish spent 4-5 hours sharing sweet treats, while connecting with their community all for a wonderful cause. Anika shared her hopes of spreading kindness to motivate others to pay it forward and by being kind she feels proud. The siblings also donate their time to PURE, People for Urban and Rural Education.

Thank you, Anika and Krish for your kindness.

Tehle and Sawyer Ross applied for and were awarded a Kid Kindness grant from Kindness Grows Here in the Fall of 2020. They used those funds, plus donations from the community to donate 90 curated gift boxes to kids in Baltimore area hospitals. Inspired by that first project, and wanting to do something in response to COVID, they are now expanding! They have just learned that they have received two grants for other organizations (one for $5,000 and one for $10,000) to distribute curated gift boxes to students who have to quarantine due to COVID.
